The Solutions for Manufacturing Advanced Regenerative Therapies (SMART CRC) has secured $65 million in federal government funding, launching a $238 million national initiative to revolutionise the manufacturing and delivery of life-changing therapies.
Bioplatforms Australia is proud to be an Industry Partner of the SMART CRC, helping to drive the development of scalable, safe, and accessible regenerative treatments through cutting-edge omics technologies and data-driven solutions. We are also delighted to be working alongside our fellow NCRIS partners — Therapeutic Innovation Australia, Phenomics Australia, and StemCore Facility — in this transformative effort.
With a vision to accelerate regenerative therapies and their adoption in Australia, the SMART CRC will create an industry-led ecosystem that drives innovation, translation, and improved health outcomes. By bringing together 63 partners from across industry, academia, and government — including Australia’s top scientists, engineers, and clinical researchers — the CRC is building sovereign capability in a field that could transform healthcare, boost economic prosperity, and reduce the burden of chronic disease.
Regenerative therapies such as gene and cell therapies, tissue engineering, and medical devices represent a new frontier in medicine, offering the potential to cure disease, reverse injury, and restore function. The SMART CRC will help position Australia as a global leader in this field, supporting an industry projected to be worth $120 billion globally by 2035.
We look forward to working with our SMART CRC partners and the outstanding leadership team: Leanna Read, Professor Simon Cool, Silvio Tiziani, Dr Chih Wei Teng, Dr Sarah Costanzo, Prof Allison Cowin, Dr Jelena Rnjak-Kovacina, Dr Heather Donaghy, Samuel Jesuadian, A/Prof Larisa M Haupt and Prof Joy Rathjen.
