Proteomics International has reached a major milestone in the development and commercialisation of PromarkerEndo, receiving a notice of acceptance from IP Australia for a patent covering its proprietary blood test for the diagnosis of endometriosis.
The Australian patent provides intellectual property protection for methods of diagnosing endometriosis using specific protein biomarkers measured in blood samples, as well as using the results to guide treatment selection. Protection is expected to extend until March 2041, subject to grant and maintenance requirements.
The milestone strengthens Proteomics International’s intellectual property portfolio and represents an important step towards bringing PromarkerEndo to the Australian healthcare market. The patent also supports the company’s broader commercialisation strategy, including future partnerships and licensing opportunities.
A non-invasive approach to endometriosis diagnosis
PromarkerEndo was developed using Proteomics International’s proprietary Promarker® biomarker discovery platform, which identifies protein ‘fingerprints’ associated with disease. The platform enables researchers to identify proteins that distinguish between people with and without a particular disease using a blood sample.
For endometriosis, this approach has the potential to provide a less invasive alternative to current diagnostic pathways. Endometriosis affects approximately one in nine women and girls, yet diagnosis can take an average of seven years. Current definitive diagnosis typically involves surgical laparoscopy, creating a significant unmet need for accurate, non-invasive diagnostic tools.
Published clinical studies have demonstrated high accuracy for PromarkerEndo in detecting endometriosis, including in the early stages of the disease. The test is being developed to support earlier diagnosis and help determine whether invasive investigation may be required for patients presenting with symptoms.
Building global intellectual property protection
The Australian patent adds to Proteomics International’s growing international intellectual property portfolio for PromarkerEndo. Patent protection has already been secured in Japan and the United States, while applications are progressing in other key markets, including Canada, China, Europe, India, Singapore and South Korea.
The Australian market represents an important opportunity for the technology, supporting Proteomics International’s plans to progress PromarkerEndo towards commercialisation and expand access to innovative, non-invasive diagnostic technologies.
