ABOUT

SMART CRC

The Solutions for Manufacturing Advanced Regenerative Therapies (SMART) Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) is a $238 million national initiative established to accelerate the development, manufacturing and clinical adoption of regenerative therapies in Australia. Backed by $65 million in federal funding, the SMART CRC is building sovereign capability in a high-growth sector with the potential to transform healthcare and deliver significant economic and social benefits.

Regenerative therapies, including gene and cell therapies, tissue engineering and advanced medical devices, offer the potential to cure disease, restore function and improve lives. However, patient access in Australia remains limited due to high manufacturing costs, complex regulatory pathways and reliance on off-shore production. The SMART CRC aims to address these challenges by fostering a collaborative, industry-led ecosystem that brings together researchers, clinicians, engineers, manufacturers and infrastructure providers.

With 63 partners across research, industry and government, the SMART CRC will deliver four integrated research programs focused on biomanufacturing, bioseparation, biomaterials and clinical enablement. Each program is designed to overcome critical barriers to scaling and delivering regenerative therapies. A strong emphasis on technology transfer and commercialisation will ensure research outputs translate into real-world solutions.

The SMART CRC is also investing in Australia’s future workforce through targeted education and training, industry-aligned PhD programs and placements that build technical and commercial capabilities.

Bioplatforms Australia is proud to be an Industry Partner of the SMART CRC, helping to drive the development of scalable, safe, and accessible regenerative treatments through cutting-edge omics technologies and data-driven solutions.
