A new $10 million genomics facility at Flinders University will strengthen Australia’s research capabilities, enabling faster and more affordable large-scale sequencing to support discoveries in health, agriculture and environmental science.
Established through a partnership between Flinders University, the South Australian Genomics Centre (SAGC), Bioplatforms Australia and Decode Science, the highly automated laboratory will deliver one of the highest-throughput and lowest-cost genomics capabilities in the Southern Hemisphere, with capacity to sequence the equivalent of up to 59,000 complete human genomes annually.
Based at Flinders University’s Bedford Park campus, the facility will use robotics to streamline the sequencing process, from sample preparation to data generation. It will operate as a national research resource for universities and research institutes, helping researchers better understand disease, develop more resilient crops and livestock, and monitor biodiversity and environmental health.
The investment will expand Australia’s access to large-scale genomic sequencing, supporting research and innovation that delivers benefits for patients, farmers, industries and communities.
