NCRIS vouchers enable new synthetic biology projects across Australia

Australia’s synthetic biology research community is receiving a significant boost, with a new wave of collaborative projects supported through the NCRIS Synthetic Biology Voucher Scheme, delivered by Bioplatforms Australia. The initiative is enabling researchers and startups to access world-class facilities and expertise, accelerating innovation across agriculture, industrial fermentation, and biomedical sectors.

Building national synthetic biology capacity

The Voucher Scheme is part of a broader investment from the Commonwealth Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) to expand Australia’s synthetic biology capability.

Bioplatforms Australia is delivering this program to bridge the gap between research and real-world application. Major investments have established industrial synthetic biology hubs at Macquarie University (Australian Genome Foundry) and the University of Queensland (IDEA Bio), with further development of the Plant Synthetic Biology Australia (PSBA) network across Adelaide University, ANU, La Trobe University, and UWA. These facilities are among the first of their kind globally, positioning Australia at the forefront of the emerging global bioeconomy.

Supporting translational research through collaboration

The Voucher Scheme provides matched funding to enable experimental development, foster collaboration across NCRIS facilities, and support early- and mid-career researchers to build translational research experience.

New research activity across key sectors

This first round supported 19 projects spanning plant biotechnology, industrial fermentation, and biomedical applications. The projects are listed in the table below.

Highlights include:

🌿 Plant SynBio – projects improving crop resilience, nutrient use, and genome editing tools.
⚗️ Industrial fermentation – sustainable biomanufacturing and microbial engineering.
🧬 Medical and biosecurity – enzyme therapeutics, precision diagnostics, and antimicrobial production.
