Three startups supported by Bioplatforms Australia have been announced as recipients of the NSW Government’s Emerging Technology Commercialisation Fund, recognising the strength of Australia’s deep-tech pipeline and the role of national research infrastructure in translating discovery into real-world impact.

The successful companies are Number 8 Bio, Platypus Bio and HydGene Renewables. Each is developing technologies that apply advances in biology and biotechnology to address major global challenges across agriculture, health and sustainable energy. The Emerging Technology Commercialisation Fund supports NSW-based companies to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative technologies with strong global market potential and aims to help promising startups bridge the gap between research and market deployment.

Bioplatforms Australia has supported the three companies through access to national research infrastructure, expertise and translational partnerships that enable the development, validation and scale-up of emerging technologies. These capabilities help emerging companies generate critical data, validate technologies and accelerate pathways to investment and commercialisation.

Number 8 Bio is developing biological solutions to reduce methane emissions from livestock, addressing one of the largest contributors to agricultural greenhouse gas emissions while supporting sustainable food production. Platypus Bio is advancing next-generation RNA technologies with applications across diagnostics, therapeutics and synthetic biology. HydGene Renewables is developing enzyme and microbial platforms designed to accelerate the production of renewable fuels and chemicals, contributing to the transition toward sustainable energy systems.

The recognition of these companies highlights the importance of Australia’s research infrastructure ecosystem in supporting the translation of breakthrough science into practical solutions. Bioplatforms Australia congratulates the teams behind Number 8 Bio, Platypus Bio and HydGene Renewables and looks forward to continuing to support their progress as they scale technologies that deliver benefits for industry, the environment and human health.
