Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Alertness Safety and Productivity
Sleep is a fundamental necessity for the human body and essential for optimal functioning during the waking day.
Unfortunately, it is neglected in today’s 24-hour society due to shift work, family commitments and the rising prevalence of sleep disorders.
Almost 10,000 serious workplace injuries and more than 25,000 serious injuries from road crashes are caused by poor alertness each year. Impaired alertness has widespread effects on core brain functions including reaction time, decision-making, information processing and the ability to maintain attention. Low performance, accidents and injuries due to reduced alertness are preventable.
The CRC for Alertness Safety and Productivity (Alertness CRC) has brought together expert knowledge, state-of-the-art technologies and effective translation pathways from industry, government and university sectors to promote the prevention and control of sleep loss, impaired alertness and sleep disorders.
The Alertness CRC will begin a new era in alertness management by driving evidence-based changes in:
- Behaviour
- Work practices
- Policy
- Legislation
- Community responses to the 24/7 lifestyle
