Human genome sequencing and analysis have significantly contributed to understanding the causes of complex diseases, improving diagnostics, enabling early disease detection, and offering more tailored treatment options. Although Australia has seen a proliferation of human genomics datasets, much of this data remains difficult to access, hindering biomedical research. Unlocking this valuable research data has the potential to accelerate advancements in disease diagnosis and treatment, but achieving this requires large-scale, complex collaborations in science and research infrastructure.

The Bioplatforms-supported Australian BioCommons is leading two key projects aimed at improving access to human genomics data:

  1. The Australian Cardiovascular Disease Data Commons (ACDC)
  2. Genomics Uplift for Australia through Research Data Infrastructure at National Scale (GUARDIANS)

Through these projects, the Australian BioCommons is bringing together key stakeholders in a coordinated effort to develop the necessary infrastructure to achieve the following objectives:

  • Ensure the secure and ethical sharing of human omics data while maintaining strict safety and privacy standards.
  • Lay the foundations for digital research infrastructure and innovation in human genomics across Australia.
  • Establish multiple data commons supporting flagship collections, develop trust and identity solutions, provide innovation pilots for future step changes, and serve as a source of technical expertise, leadership, support, and training.

Beneficiaries of these initiatives include Australian human omics researchers, research institutions, the global human omics research community, and individuals suffering from complex diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular conditions.

Key partners in the Australian Cardiovascular Disease Data Commons (ACDC) project include the Baker Institute, 23 Strands, the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance, CSL, the University of Sydney, and Australian BioCommons. Partners for the GUARDIANS project will be announced upon finalisation of agreements.
