Australia’s forests are facing growing pressures—from climate change and invasive pathogens to fire, drought, and habitat fragmentation. These ecosystems are home to many of the country’s most iconic and ecologically important species, and their long-term resilience is vital to biodiversity, ecosystem services, and environmental health.
To address these challenges, we are proud to launch the Genomics for Forest Resilience Initiative, a national program dedicated to applying advanced genomic tools to improve the restoration and conservation of Australia’s native forests. Supported by Bioplatforms Australia and a network of partners, including Restore and Renew, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, this initiative will accelerate the generation of high-quality genomic data for priority forest species, with a particular focus on those vulnerable to climate extremes and disease.
The initiative aims to deliver:
- Reference and population genomes for key forest species
- Enhanced tools for ecological monitoring and restoration planning
- Support for ex-situ collections and provenance-based seed sourcing
The Genomics for Forest Resilience Initiative will support DNA extraction and the creation of high-quality reference genomes and whole genome population data for Australia’s forest species. By increasing the availability of quality genomic data for Australia’s forest plants, the Genomics for Forest Resilience Initiative marks a significant step forward in data-informed management of long living forest species and future-proofing Australia’s forests.
